Why virtual training needs to be more engaging
Learning and Development (L&D) departments are facing a challenge.
Expectations are rising, yet their budgets are only rising in line with inflation. The time and cost of travel is creating greater pressure to deliver training online. 23% of all formal learning hours are now delivered as self-paced training online (e-learning)1. The number of companies delivering most of their training as e-learning is expected to double between 2017 and 2022.
There are many benefits of course from e-learning, but organizations also recognize the improved learning outcomes of instructor-led training, which is why 67% of learning hours are still instructor-led1.

The desire for the benefits of both online and instructor-led training has led to the continued growth of live online learning.

Yet adoption is limited and only 10% of all formal training programs are delivered live online4.

And today almost all live virtual training is delivered through online video conference calls using products such as Adobe Connect, GoToMeeting, Skype, WebEx or Zoom. Calls where even the trainers have their video switched off.

Only 42% of virtual trainers turn on their webcam at the start of a class and 23% have them turned on during the entire session6.
No wonder 36% of organizations say that unengaged participants are one of the top challenges for virtual training7.
